Signature certification
Bring original valid ID and the unsigned document. An appointed Certifying Officer certifies the signature or seal, not the document contents.
Cyprus document for a Hague Convention country
Only the competent Cyprus authority issues the Apostille. It authenticates the signature, capacity and seal, not the contents. Confirm the recipient’s requirements first.
Cyprus document for a non-Hague country
Certification by the Cyprus Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then the destination country’s diplomatic mission may be required. Confirm the exact chain before proceeding.
Certain EU public documents
Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 removes the Apostille requirement for certain covered public documents presented to a public authority in another EU Member State; multilingual standard forms may reduce translation needs.
Registered sworn translations
Certified translations for official use are provided by translators in Cyprus’s official Register. Confirm the document route and required order before translation.
Common Cyprus document questions
1. Is Paphos Notary a civil-law notary?
No. Cyprus does not have the general civil-law notary institution. Different official acts are performed by different appointed persons and public authorities.
2. Should I sign before my appointment?
Usually no. For signature certification, an affidavit, oath or affirmation, sign or swear only in the presence of the competent authorised person.
3. What should I bring?
Bring original valid identification, the unsigned document and any instructions from the receiving authority.
4. Who issues a Cyprus Apostille?
Only the competent Cyprus authority issues an Apostille. It authenticates the signature, capacity and seal on a public document; it does not certify the document's contents.
5. Do all foreign documents need an Apostille?
No. The route depends on the destination, document type and receiving authority. Some EU public documents may be exempt, while non-Hague destinations may require diplomatic legalisation.
6. Can you arrange a sworn translation?

7. Do you certify true copies of public records?
A public record usually must be issued or verified by the competent issuing authority. A Certifying Officer generally certifies a signature or seal, not the document contents.
